1. Milk and Milk Products

Adulteration with extra water

  • Put a drop of milk on the slanting polish and smooth surface or plate
  • If the sample includes added water, it will leave the surface early in contrast to the non-adulterated milk without forming a milk tail on the plate

Adulteration with Detergent

  • Take a milk in transparent glass or utensils and add identical amount of water in it
  • Shake the container thoroughly. If the milk is adulterated with the detergent, the dense lather will form

Detection of starch 

  • Boil identical quantity of milk or milk product sample with water
  • Cool the sample and add tincture of iodine to the sample
  • Formation of blue color to the sample will suggest the positive test for starch content 

2. Confectionary

Adulteration of honey with sugar solution 

  • Take an apparent glass container whole of water
  • Add a drop of honey into it
  • If the drop of honey disperses withinside the water, then it is added with the sugar syrup
  • Pure honey does not disperse with the water

Adulteration with chalk powder

  • Take an apparent glass container whole of water
  • Add the sample into it and mix well
  • Keep container containing sample as it is for 5 mins
  • If the chalk powder is present in the sample, then it will sink at the bottom of the glass

Adulteration of Khoya with starch  

  • Boil identical quantity of khoya sample with identical quantity of water
  • Cool the sample and add tincture of iodine to the sample
  • Formation of blue shade will suggest the positive test for starch content

3. Oils and Fats

Adulteration of coconut with any other oil

  • Take an oil sample withinside the glass and keep in the refrigerator for 30 mins
  • The coconut oil will solidify due to refrigeration and the adulterated oil will form a clear layer as it will not get freeze

Adulteration with TOCP (Tri-Ortho-Cresyl-Phosphate)

  • Take an oil sample in bowl 
  • Add yellow solidified butter in it
  • Immediate formation of pink shade suggests first-rate test for TOCP

Proper Winterization of salad oil 

  • Take 100ml sample oil in a bottle, close it tightly and seal with the paraffin.
  • Submerge the bottle truly in a bucket containing finely cracked ice then add water till it rises to the top of the bottle
  • The bucket is filled with ice then added with more water and along with ice even as necessary till the bottle covers up
  • After 5 hours remove the bottle and test oil for adulteration 
  • If it is well winterized, the sample may be brilliant, smooth and limpid

4. Food Grains and Its Products

Detection of extraneous material 

  • Take a sample in a dish and test visually for the extraneous material 
  • Pure grain does not consist of any extraneous material

Detection of dhatura 

  • Take a sample in a dish and test visually for the extraneous material 
  • Dhatura seeds are flat with edges and blackish brown in shadeation which can be identified with visual examination
  • Impurities can be decided visually in adulterated food grains

Detection of more or extra bran 

  • Take a water in an apparent glass 
  • Add grain sample withinside the glass 
  • Sample with extra bran shows the floated bran on the surface of the water

5. Fruits and Vegetables

Detection of malachite 

  • Take a soaked cotton piece with water or vegetable oil.
  • Rube the ground of the sample with the cotton. 
  • If the cotton turns green, it will show the malachite green is present.

Detection of applied green color on the peas

  • Take an apparent glass whole of water 
  • Add the sample of peas into it 
  • Keep the glass as it is for half of an hour
  • If the water turns green, the sample is adulterated with green color shade

Detection of Rhodamine on potatoes 

  • Take cotton soaked in water or oil.
  • Rube the ground of the sample with the cotton. 
  • If the cotton turns green, it will show the malachite green is present.

6. Beverages

Detection of clay in coffee powder

  • Take an apparent glass of water and add half a teaspoon of coffee powder.
  • Stir it for a minute and preserve it aside for some time and have a look at the glass at the bottom.
  • If coffee powder is adulterated, clay particles will settle at the bottom and non-adulterated coffee powder will not leave any clay particles at the bottom of the glass.

Detection of iron in tea leaves 

  • Take tea leaves on a glass plate.
  • Move the magnet slowly through the tea leaves.
  • If the tea leaves are non-adulterated, it will not show any iron filings on the magnet and if it is adulterated the iron filings may be seen on the magnet

Detection of chicory powder in coffee powder

  • Take an apparent glass whole of water and add a teaspoon of coffee powder in it.
  • Coffee powder floats over the water and chicory will begin to sink.
